Donna, a force of nature, and a soft place to land, who mastered both with a lead rope in one hand and a cat in her lap. She passed away on February 8 at the age of 72, leaving behind a legacy as spirited and untamed as the animals she loved.
She valued her independence above all else, but that steel exterior hid a heart that would quite literally give you the shirt off her back—provided you didn’t try to tell her how to button it. Donna was always there for her family. She was their “Number One Fan”, always the first to help and the last to leave their corner. She protected her own, kept everyone safe and the voice that told them they could do anything. She loved them.
Donna found her greatest peace in the barn among those who didn't talk back: her horses. Donna was fluent in the language of a soft nicker and a steady purr. With her camera always nearby, she had a gift for capturing the soul of her horses and the spirit of her cats. She had the deepest love for her animals and a lifelong weakness for a good piece of candy. If there was a horse in the barn or a cat in her lap, she had everything she ever needed.
She is survived by her dearest friend and devoted caregiver, Jessie (Shawn) , who walked alongside her with the patience and respect she deserved. Brother Gerald Prom, Sister Marlene Prom, Fur Baby: Ivy ~ who will miss her touch, Uncle Reno (Elsa) Dippmann, Nieces, Nephews, many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Alvin & Bernice (Dippmann) Prom, Brother Thomas (Bernadette) Prom, Niece Angie Voll, Fur Babies: Skippy, Sea-A-Tee, Raven, Chloe. Equine-Babies: Shawn, Ramah and Lacey.
We like to think she’s already back in the saddle, riding off into a sunset where no one is giving her directions.
A funeral service and burial will be held this spring when the pastures are green. Specific details will be announced at a later date.
To honor Donna’s memory, strike up a conversation with a stranger, give your cat or horse an extra treat, or indulge in a piece of candy. Above all, perform an act of kindness today—and in true Donna fashion, don’t let anyone tell you how to do it.
