Greta Ebel, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away on November 27, 2025, in Mequon, Wisconsin, at the age of 95. Born to Erling and Bernice Pettersen, Greta lived with a spirit marked by gratitude, generosity, and a deep love for family and friends.
Greta grew up in Homewood, Illinois, where she excelled as a student and delighted in riding the train to school each day. She enjoyed dance and synchronized swimming, and she was a passionate admirer of Frank Sinatra—so much so that she once bravely skipped school for a chance to see him perform.
Following high school, Greta studied journalism and education at UW–Milwaukee. During those years, she met the love of her life, Eugene Ebel, at a penny dance. Although Greta arrived with one young man, she left with Eugene—and the two would become inseparable. They married on August 16, 1952, and shared nearly 70 years of marriage before Eugene’s passing.
After living for a time in Milwaukee and Stevens Point, Greta and Eugene settled in Brookfield, Wisconsin, in a newly built home. Greta adored both the community and the house itself. With her creative eye and many talents, she transformed it into a warm, welcoming place where countless memories were made.
While raising their three children, Greta also put her education and skills to work as a proofreader. She dedicated ten years to the E.F. Schmidt Publishing Company, where her meticulous attention to detail and high standards were deeply valued.
Greta found joy in many things: reading, tending her garden, and soaking up sunshine on her patio. She and Eugene traveled widely throughout the United States and abroad, and they especially treasured their springtime stays in Holiday, Florida. She also relished the simple pleasures of life—playing cards with her close-knit “club” of friends, watching Dancing with the Stars and Survivor, and savoring quiet moments at home. Though very independent, Greta remained deeply connected to those around her, offering steady kindness, affection, and encouragement.
Greta is survived by her brother, Fred Pettersen; her three children: Susan Ebel; Lisa (Patrick) Mulcahy; and Bruce (Carol) Ebel; four grandchildren: Luke (Frances) Mulcahy; Zachary (Anna) Mulcahy; Megan (Marshall) Ambros; and Connor (Adriane) Mulcahy; and five great-grandchildren: Asher, Ingrid, Gordon, Teddy, and Shaw. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Norma. Greta’s family meant the world to her, and she cherished every moment spent together—leaving behind a legacy of love that will continue for generations.
A celebration of Greta’s life will be held at 3pm on Sunday, December 28, at Vineyard Church in Grafton, with visitation from 2 - 3pm. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance, sharing stories and honoring the joy and warmth Greta brought to so many. Please join us for a light meal after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vineyard Church.
In this time of sorrow, we give thanks for Greta’s bright spirit and the lasting impact she had on all who knew her. May her memory be a source of comfort, inspiration, and strength.
