James T. Kurth

Listen to Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and faith in eternal peace that we announce the passing of James T. Kurth, who left this world on August 22, 2025, at the age of 90, to be with Jesus. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and esteemed member of the Cedarburg, WI community. Jim was born on April 30, 1935, in Port Washington, WI. He was a proud, direct descendant of Martin Groth,1 of the 5 Groth brothers who were German immigrant's instrumental in founding Cedarburg in 1842 and spent his entire life in the town he loved.

Jim was a dedicated family man, cherished by his wife, Betty, and lovingly remembered by his children, Lisa (Jeff) Boerner, Steve (Terry), Peter (Allison), and John (Monica). He is also survived by his 7 grandchildren Morgan (Phillip) Potter, Ellen (Korey) Soich, Sam, Matt, Natalie, Ryan (Kasey) and Brayden Kurth and one great-grandchild Grayson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Mary (Behm) Kurth and brothers Harold and Bernie, whose legacies shaped his character and values.

A graduate of Cedarburg High School, Jim remained closely tied to the community throughout his life, having attended First Immanuel Lutheran Church and School since childhood. He served honorably in the US Army, and after his military service, he devoted nearly five decades to the banking industry, rising to the esteemed position of Vice President. His commitment to personal service extended beyond his career; he was a man of integrity, ethics and compassion, whose warmth touched the lives of many.

What began as an empty one-acre field became a labor of love for Jim and Betty, who together built not only a home but a sanctuary of beauty and growth. Their shared passion for gardening transformed their land into a flourishing haven - a reflection of their dedication and care. They were deeply honored and humbled to have their garden featured on the Cedarburg Garden Tour and in the Sunday Post – a recognition that brought them quiet pride and lasting joy.

In his retirement, Jim discovered and developed a passion for wood carving and Pyrography (wood burning) - a hobby that allowed him to express his creativity and find solace in artistry. He enjoyed creating a large number of animals, flowers and vintage cars which he gifted to friends and relatives.

Jim’s life will be celebrated in a memorial service at First Immanuel Lutheran Church (W67 N622 Evergreen Blvd.), Cedarburg, on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. Visitation is 4:00 to 6:00 PM with funeral service starting at 6:00PM.

In this time of grief, we remember Jim not only for his accomplishments but for the kindness, laughter, and affection he brought into the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know him. The legacy he leaves behind will forever resonate within the hearts of all who loved him. We take comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to live on through the memories he created and the love he shared. Jim, God has you in His keeping and we have you forever in our hearts.

The family would like to thank his care team at Horizon Hospice, his daughter Lisa, Julia, Christina and Jessi for caring for Jim in his final journey.

Memorials may be sent to First Immanuel Lutheran Church, Horizon Home Care and Hospice, Cedarburg Fire Department or a memorial of your choice.
