Listen to Obituary

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Raymond “Big Ray” Fuerstenberg, age 80, of Grafton, Wisconsin, who passed away, on May 25, 2026. Born on September 1, 1945, in Port Washington, Wisconsin, Ray lived a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.

Ray was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He first married Judy in 1966, creating a family that thrived in love and companionship until her passing, in 1986. In 1991, Ray found love again with Diane. Together, they blended their families, fostering a home of warmth, care, and shared adventures. Ray's passion for life was evident in every facet—whether he was road tripping with Diane to casinos, perfecting his grilling skills, or cheering on the Brewers and Packers.

Ray’s pride and joy was his 1965 Chevelle, which he bought at the age of 20, and still had today. His countless hours of washing and detailing his prized possession were truly evident in not only his Chevelle but also in his other vehicles.

Ray dedicated 33 years to the Village of Grafton Public Works, growing from a crew member to the esteemed position of Operations Coordinator retiring in 2000. His commitment echoed the values of hard work and community service he instilled in his children. After retirement, Ray kept himself busy working part-time positions with local companies, walking to the Grafton Mobil for coffee and camaraderie, he also became the family promoter for the Mobil Super Bowl pool, which he diligently forced upon his family, and made sure that his family was present at the Grafton Mobil for the annual Christmas parade.

As an enthusiastic coach in little league baseball, Ray passionately led one of his teams, the Cubs, to victory, teaching teamwork and perseverance. He loved to play sheepshead, which he was exceptional at, as well as spending time with his good friends, Richie Scheer and Corey Esselmann, whom he could rely on for anything he needed.

Ray was lovingly known as "Mr. Mom" to Ray and Sean after Judy's passing. He was a great cook and grill master, whose steaks were legendary. Ray had a unique gift for finding joy in the simple moments, whether sharing lottery tickets with his family or teaching his kids the fine art of washing, waxing, and vacuuming his vehicles.

Ray is survived by his wife, Diane Fuerstenberg, children, Ray (Vicki) Fuerstenberg, Sean (Heidi) Fuerstenberg, Jennifer (Justin) Newkirk, and Mark (Cheyenne) Jensen, grandchildren: Payton, Brynn, Kristin, and Ryan Furestenberg, and Kyler Newkirk; and siblings, Julie Hanson, Darlene Biever, and Leroy Fuerstenberg. Further survived by good friends, Bill Bahrke and Rick Wiedenhaft, other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Judy, and brother, Earl Fuerstenberg.

Funeral Arrangements are pendiing.

A special thank you to the staff at Lasata Care Center, Cedarburg, as well as the 2nd floor Med-Surgery Department at Aurora Medical Center, Grafton, for all of their wonderful care and compassion.

As we reflect on Ray's life, let us rejoice in the memories we shared with him, and carry his spirit of love and kindness into our own lives. Ray will always be the wind beneath our wings.
